    When visiting an area, Hidden Gems Tours are the perfect addition to your holiday. It's a travel experience that is both your guide and adventure you'll never forget.


    The objective is to have fun and discover the place and culture you visit in a much deeper way. As you are in complete control of your route and experience, it the perfect 'contact free' way to discover your travel destination.

  • How does a Hidden Gems Tour work?

    • Using a smartphone app with GPS technology, a series of map pins guide you to secret destinations and 100's of travel themed clues and challenges.
    • Hidden Gems Tours vary in size, from Minihunt to Megahunt. However, an average Hidden Gems Tour is set within a 10km radius of an amazing travel destination.
    • Every Hidden Gems Tour boasts 100's of clues, challenges, travel tips and vouchers to local treats. The bigger the Geohunt, the more they contain.
    • You explore independently with your family and friends.
    • It's not a race. You enjoy at your own pace, taking time to enjoy the places you visit.
    • You can 'start, pause and finish' at any time.
    • 100's of destination pins are shown across the area, so you can choose where you would like to begin and finish.
    • Every challenge you complete earns you points. Points help you climb the leader board, and often win prizes.
    • You can play to win, attempting to complete as many challenges as possible. Or enjoy a slower pace, and not worry about points.
    • You use your own transport. Minihunts are best on foot; Megahunts will require you to use your own car etc.
    • Almost all activities are set in the great outdoors. Some with urban settings, and many are rural or wild.

  • Is a Hidden Gems Tour suitable for all ages?

    Absolutely, we have Hidden Gems Tous for all. 

  • How is it different from Geocaching or other Scavenger Hunts?

    First and foremost, a Hidden Gems Tour is an immersive travel experience. Like geocaching, you'll use your smartphone to find a location. The difference is when you get there, there is so much to learn and do.

  • We are familiar the destination already. Will a Hidden Gems Tour still be fun?

    Absolutely. Hidden Gems Tours get you off the beaten track and exploring the hidden gems of each destination. You will always come across somewhere and something new

  • How many people can be in a team?

    There is no limit. A ticket gives you access per device (team), not per participant. So how many people in a team depends on how many devices you wish to use. If you are happy sharing a device, then friends and family can play together with just one ticket. But if you prefer to split up occasionally and use more than one device, then additional tickets are required.

  • Can I play by myself?

    Absolutely. Your group size is completely up to you

  • Is it fun for families with kids?

    Yes! Our Hidden Gems Tours are great for kids and adults alike. Choose a difficulty level that's right for your family

  • How many clues and destinations are included?

    An average Hidden Gems Tours takes you to 5-10 Destinations and contains over 100 challenges and clues. They also contain lots of travel tips, guide info, and vouchers for local attractions and services

  • How much does a Hidden Gems Tour cost?

    Ticket prices depend on location and type of Hidden Gems Tour:

    • £15 per device - Minihunt: 1 Day Pass
    • £25 per device - Geohunt: 7 Day Pass
    • £35 per device - Megahunt: 14 Day Pass
  • Are discounts available?

  • Which payment methods can I use?

    You can purchase online using all standard  payment cards, such as:

  • Can I book as a gift for someone else?

    Yes. Cluecation gift cards are a great option to surprise and treat someone you care about. Give a gift card so they can arrange a Hidden Gems Tour they’ll love the most

    If you book with your email address (to keep it a surprise), then the user may want to change to their email address before they activate. Hidden Gems Tourare a challenge in which you earn points. Points earned are connected to the provided email address in our system

  • Can I get an invoice?

    Yes. As soon as you book, you'll receive an automated email with your ticket and invoice

  • How long will I spend on my Hidden Gems Tour?

    It's completely depends on how quickly you travel, how many breaks you take to enjoy the sites and scenery during the day, and what type of Hidden Gems Tour you've chosen. 


    But please remember, it's not a race, and you don’t have to complete everything if you don't want to. If you prefer to take your time, and if you are visiting the area for several days, it's also easy to choose a multiday pass.

  • When will I receive my ticket and login details?

    As soon as you make your booking you will receive a ‘receipt for payment’ and your ‘ticket’ (which includes login details).

    Please check your junk folder if not found in your inbox directly. Emails can sometimes be found there.

    If you have booked multiple tickets to use more than one device, you will receive a separate ticket for each device.

  • Can I change the date of my booking?

    If you've booked an 'Anytime Pass' you can use it anytime for 180 days (6months) after your purchase date.

    If you have booked special ‘Live Event Ticket’ please email us at least 24hours beforehand.

  • What is the cancellation policy?

    This is Easy. Life should be simple.


    You can cancel for free at least 1 day before the event, as long as your pass hasn't been activated. That means a 100% refund for all Hidden Gems Tours, no questions asked (unless activated).

  • Will my pass expire?

    You can use your Pass any time from the day of purchase. However, it must be used within 6 months of booking. After 180 days your pass will expire

  • Will my ticket expire if not activated?

    Anytime Pass. Can be used anytime within 180 days of purchase


    Live Event Ticket. Can be used on the chosen date only


Before you travel


  • What happens after we've booked?

    You will receive your ticket by email shortly after booking. It includes:


    • Instructions how to download the app
    • Your unique access code

    On the day of your Cluecation, simply download the app and login with your code. To confirm, all details will be provided on your ticket

  • How to download the App?

    You’ll need an Android or Apple smartphone or tablet with data connectivity to enjoy the experience. The App can be downloaded here:


  • When should I login?

    Log in only when you are ready to start the experience. As soon as you log in, your access begins and your pass' time starts counting down. 


    • A good example: You’ve booked a 1 Day Pass (giving you 24hour access) and you plan to travel on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Logging in at 1pm on Saturday will be perfect, as this means you’ll be able to access until 1pm the following day. 
    • A bad example: You were too excited to wait, and logged in on Friday!  Your 24hour access has started before your ready to start!  This means that you're wasting much of your time, and it will expire before Sunday.

    If you need more time and flexibility, it’s easy to book a multiday pass.

  • Can I choose my own start time?

    Yes. Login when and only when you are ready to start. This can be anytime from 12:00am on the day of your ticket/event

  • Should we begin at the recommended start location?

    It's up to you. You can choose any route and start/finish point you wish. This should fit with your travel plans perhaps.For example:


    Your GeoHunt covers 3 major places on the map


    • Place 'A' is in the West of the region
    • Place 'B' is centrally located in the region
    • Place 'C' is in the East of the region

    If you are traveling to the region from the West, it probably makes sense for you to Start at 'A', then 'B', and Finish in 'C'.

    It's completely up to you


  • What happens if we get stuck or can’t answer a clue?

    Don’t worry if your team can't complete a challenge. They can be challenging after all, and that is part of the fun!

  • How much walking is involved?

    Totally up to you, and it also varies depending on the type of Hidden Gems Tour. We certainly recommend wearing your most comfortable walking shoes!

  • What should I wear?

    Whatever is comfortable and most suitable for the weather and terrain you will experience

  • Can I play if I don’t know the area well?

    Absolutely. Hidden Gems Tours require no local knowledge before you start. In fact, the aim is for you gain local knowledge as you play

  • Can you play on two or more phones at the same time?

    Each pass you purchase can be accessed on one device at a time. If you have a large group and would like to use more devices, please feel free to book additional tickets for the number of devices you wish to use.

  • I have an iPad/tablet. Can I use it instead of my smartphone?

    Yes. If it is also SIM card compatible with a data internet connection (4G/5G).

  • Do I need to have a power bank?

    Most modern smartphones have long battery life. However, using your phone for mapping with GPS does drain battery faster than normal usage. We certainly recommend bringing a power bank and ability to recharge your phone if needed. Especially if you use an older device.

  • If we have questions, where and when can we contact you?

    You're in the perfect place. Click 'Contact Us' to send us any questions you have. We try to respond within 60 minutes (9am-5pm)

  • I'm traveling internationally. Can I still play?

    Yes, players must have mobile data enabled on their smartphones. Contact your mobile carrier for information on rates and coverage if you are traveling internationally. Our system supports phone numbers from all over the world, so it can often be more affordable to buy a local pay-as-you-go sim card

  • Roaming charges

    Contact your mobile carrier for information on rates and coverage when traveling internationally.

    It can often be much cheaper to buy a local pay-as-you-go sim card for the country you are visiting. These can often be bought at your arrival airport or station.


Using the app


  • Basic gameplay

    Standard Hidden Gems Tour:


    • On your map you will see a series of pins. Travel to these destinations to discover secret spots, clues and challenges.
    • More pins popup locally when you answer your first clue in that area, leading you on a series of cultural adventures connected to that place and theme.
    • Complete as many challenges as you wish. Every completed challenge will reward you with points (often 5).
  • What are the Map Pins?

    Pin types & Points available

    • Places = 5 Points
    • Walking/Cycle Routes = 5 Points
    • Social Photo Challenges = 5 Points
    • Quiz & Challenges = 10 Points
    • Clues = 20 Points
    • Treasure = 100 Points
    • Superpower = x 3 Points for 30min
  • Is it a competition?

    It's up to you. There is, if you want there to be. Your experience is private just for you. But other teams may play the same Hidden Gems Tour... and everyone that plays can have their points on the leader board. If you want to win prizes and raise up the leader board, complete as many challenges as you can. Or simply take it easy and go at your own pace

  • Is there a time limit?

    No. You can stop and start whenever you like within your Day Pass duration.

    Occasionally challenges have a mini time limit to complete that clue (e.g. 60 seconds), but most will not

  • Where do we start?

    You can choose to begin anywhere in the region, and finish your adventure where you choose also. We often recommend a central point that offers great facilities, but this is simply a recommendation. For example:


    Your Hidden Gems Tour covers 3 major places on the map

    • Place 'A' is in the West of the region
    • Place 'B' is centrally located in the region
    • Place 'C' is in the East of the region

    If you are traveling to the region from the West, it probably makes sense for you to Start at 'A', then 'B', and Finish in 'C'. It's completely up to you

  • Is there Cluecation staff at the location?

    No. There is no instructor or tour guide present. Hidden Gems Tours allow you complete freedom to explore when and where you want

  • What time should we start?

    You can start at any time. However, we generally recommend travelling during daylight hours, as some locations are harder to find in the dark. Hidden Gems Tours  may also take you close to famous attractions nearby, so during the day it's often nice to visit free/paid attractions while you are there

  • Can I pause the game?

    Yes, you can go in and out of your App as many times as you choose. Although your timer can't be stopped once you begin, depending on the Day Pass you purchase (1 Day, 2 Day, 3 Day) you will have plenty of time to take breaks whenever you wish

  • What if the weather is bad on the day?

    For outdoor fun like this, we must embrace the weather. Hidden Gems Tour go ahead come rain or shine.

    In extreme weather conditions we may postpone an event. In these cases we offer a new date for the event

  • What are Superpowers?

    On your Hidden Gems Tour, you may discover bonus pins called Superpowers! They don't provide points like clues and challenges, but they are great fun! There are two superpowers, POWER UP and FREEZE.


    • Power Up will multiply any points you earn within a timespan, so if your team is quick they can get much bigger score completing challenges while the Power Up is active.
    • The freeze isn't so kind. It freezes your team for 2 minutes if you walk over it! In other words, your team is benched for a short time if you hit one.
  • Can I edit our team name?

    Not once your game has begun, sorry.

  • Can I fly a drone?

    Many places do not permit drone flying from or over sites in the area. Please assume drone flying is not allowed unless first receiving permission from the land owner

  • Is it dog friendly?

    Yes, usually. Hidden Gems Tours are set predominantly outdoors, so dogs on leads are welcome within most outdoor settings.

  • Can we share our photos?

    Absolutely. We would love you to #cluecation and share on social media. To see what others have shared in one place, search #Cluecation


What's included


  • Will there be a tour guide?

    No. There is no instructor or tour guide present. Hidden Gems Tours give you complete freedom to explore when and where you want to. Your guide is your Hidden Gems Tour, and the map points and clues within. These help your team navigate and find notable landmarks and hidden gems

  • Is food and drink included?

    No. But there will be plenty of amazing dining options along your route. Your Hidden Gems Tour may also provide you with cultural foodie tips and vouchers for local restaurants and cafes

  • Is transportation provided?

    No. For most Hidden Gems Tour you will need your own transport or utilise public transport to explore the area in full

  • Do I need my own smartphone or tablet

    Yes. The App is free to download, but you will need your own compatible device to use it on

  • Will I have to pay for anything other than the tour?

    Only if you choose to. Our challenges sometimes bring you close by famous and paid attractions, but never require you to enter it unless you'd like to separately from the game.


    But please do take your time and visit as many additional sites as you wish. It would be a shame to miss out on amazing places as you travel

  • Do I need to bring anything?

    We recommended you have:

    • Comfortable walking shoes
    • Water Bottle to stay hydrated
    • Fully charged phone battery (and external battery or charger)

  • My login details do not work. What should I do?

    • Turn the App off, and try again
    • Delete the app, reload it, and try again
    • Contact us
  • What happens if my phone/tablet battery dies?

    If you can recharge it, that's great. If not, you can resume the game on another device.


    • The new device must be connected to the internet
    • Download the app from Apple App store or Google Play store.
    • Open the app and login with the same username and password for the game.
    • Proceed until you are asked for the team name and then click 'resume with existing team' instead of choosing a new team name. The new device will be able to continue from the last saved position.

    If your phone/tablet stops working and you have to reboot, you can also continue the game on the same device by following the same steps above

  • Why does my device have difficulty finding the points on the map?

    Try adjusting GPS settings on your device. For Apple and Android, you can adjust the location accuracy in settings.

    Or perhaps you are using an outdated version of iOS or the Loquiz app. Check to see if the App or your phone requires a software update

  • Where can I report a bug?

    We expect you experience to be flawless, but if you do experience a bug, we absolutely want to know about it. We can quickly fix the issue for you and others. Please email us. As with all Apps (and technology), also try turning it off and on again! It’s amazing how often this actually works

  • Am I healthy enough to do a Hidden Gems Tour?

    That's entirely up to you! Hidden Gems Tours can be enjoyed by almost anyone regardless of age and ability

  • I'm under 18. Can I still participate?

    Yes, with adult supervision at all times

  • Can I remain socially distanced?

    As you travel independently (self-drive/walk) with our GPS App guiding you, it’s a fantastic way to explore and avoid the crowds. Often set outside with space to socially distance, entrance to indoor settings (cafés/museums etc.) is optional if you wish, but not required

  • What about Insurance?

    You should purchase and be covered by your own travel insurance everytime you travel.

  • Can we use public transportation?

    We certainly encourage the use of public transportation when and where possible, and it is often the best form of transport in urban areas. Some Hidden Gems Tours can be more rural, however, and so private transportation is often preferable. Go elective whenever you can.

  • Is it wheelchair accessible?

    We try our best. At least 70% of clues and challenges are accessible to all. However, some destinations are in rural settings, and access to sites can be via public footpaths or uneven country tracks. These can become muddy in wet weather and may be unsuitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

  • Is it stroller accessible?

    We try our best. At least 70% of clues and challenges are accessible to all. However, some destinations are in rural settings, and access to sites can be via public footpaths or uneven country tracks.

  • Are Hidden Gems Tours suitable for the visually impaired?

    Unfortunately, they may not be. Hidden Gems Tours may be unsuitable for the visually impaired, as solving clues and challenges may require information obtained from plaques, inscriptions and other permanent features within the landscape.

  • Are Hidden Gems Tours only available in English?

    At the moment yes, although more languages are coming soon.

Technology


  • Supported devices

    The app used to play Geohunts is developed by our partner Loquiz. It works on both Android and iOS, and downloaded in Google Play and the Apple App Store. Currently supported devices:


    Android

    Android 7  and higher.

    Special note: Loquiz needs Google Play Services to operate. On some Huawei phones Google Play Services are not available and Loquiz can not be used.


    IOS

    iOS version 13 or higher for iPhones and iPads

    Special note: Wifi only iPad does not have GPS chip and can not be used to play location-based games.


    Please note: to keep up with the development of operating systems the minimum OS requirement will increase in the future.

  • Application access settings

    For full functionality, It is important to allow the application access to your device in settings:


    • Location Services - to locate your destination and activate clue and challenges when outdoors
    • Camera/photos - to complete challenges that require photo and video content
    • Microphone - to complete challenges that may require sound recording

    If the game does not work as expected, please check your device’s settings. Please do not use restricted mode in iOS while playing

  • Tablets with GPS but without mobile internet connectivity

    Mobile internet connectivity vastly improves the use of GPS. This is because devices calculate their location by first locating satellites, and this satellite data is usually retrieved using internet. If internet connection is not available the same data is received over GPS signal, but downloading using GPS only signal takes a long time (10 minutes or more). During this time GPS behaves erratically and is not accurate. Therefore, if you have a tablet without mobile internet connectivity, you will need to take some extra steps:


    • Start your devices GPS function when you are connected to WIFI. This is so initial needed data can be be downloaded in advance. The data ages within days, so you need to do this before each time you GeoHunt.
    • If you do not have internet connection make sure you open the app and give it several minutes so that the system has needed time for initial lock. Do so in wide open place so satellites are visible.
  • Mobile internet connectivity. Do I need continuous WiFi or 4G?

    It is strongly recommended to equip your devices with mobile data connectivity (also called 4G, 5G).


    The app manages short mobile data loss efficiently but it is possible to play without continuous internet connection. In other words, it is possible to start a game in a Wi-Fi area and play without internet connection. Most functions (tasks activations, answering, score calculation) in the device will work. Hints, intros and QR-codes also do not need the internet connection to work. Map is displayed only for smaller areas (the area that is cached in the beginning of the game). 


    However, if you want the full experience, we recommend playing games with mobile internet connection present throughout. This is because the follow functions need internet connection to work:


    • Media in tasks, such as images, videos and websites are streamed when task is opened and need internet to open.
    • Chat messages are delivered only if internet connection is present.
    • Online results tables with team progress, score and answers are uploaded to the server after each answer via internet. All this info is also saved in device and updated when the connection is present.
    • Uploading photos and videos need internet connection to work. You can still take photos and videos if internet connection is not present, but they are saved in the devices and can only be accessed from device Album if needed.
    • Continuing the game on another device (resume) works only with internet, as when connection is not present the GeoHunts progress is not saved in our servers. However,  if players accidentally close the game it can be continued on the same device
  • Can I use a Wifi Only iPad?

    No. Wifi only iPads do not have mobile internet, and they also do not have GPS functionality. They therefore can't be used for location specific activities like GeoHunt

  • What happens if my internet connection breaks?

    The good news is, nothing will happen. The Hidden Gems Tour is downloaded to the device when it is started and it is possible to continue even if there is no internet connection. The only exception are photos and videos – they are not uploaded to the server when internet connection is not present.  Also online results are not updated until internet connection returns. While we do not recommend it, it is possible to play the game without any internet connection (you still need connection to start a game).

  • How to resume an ongoing Hidden Gems Tour?

    Hidden Gems Tours are built so you can pause and continue later with the same team, on the same device, or on another device. The Hidden Gems Tour continues where you left off. There are two options for this:


    • Continue last game on the same device. Open the app with the same device; on login screen choose "continue last game“; the Geohunt will continue where you left off. You do not need internet connection to use this functionality because all the game information is saved in your device’s cache.
    • Continue on another device (resume). You might want to use another device to continue the game (for example, if your initial device runs out of battery). Please note, this is only possible if you had internet connectivity previously and your results and position was uploaded to our server. If so, open the app and log in with your username and unique access code; choose "resume with existing team“; choose team to which you want to resume and push "OK"; confirm your choice. Your game will continue where it was left off.

    If there is no good internet connection, you can still continue the game with the same team but only on the same device, using “continue last game“.


    • Resuming is not possible if you have already finished the game (visited finish location) or if your allotted access pass has expired
    • Resuming is not possible if the player is active on another device. Please exit the application on another device before trying to resume.
  • Can I change my email address and name?

    When purchasing a ticket you provide your email address and name. If you need to change your email address or name, please contact us

  • Where are my photos and videos?

    All photos and videos taken during your GeoHunt will automatically be saved within your mobile device’s media gallery and within the app
